ARE YOU HAVING TROUBLE GETTING YOUR STATE LICENSE?

Several members of MSHA have raised concerns about the process of getting the state license to practice after the completion of the Clinical Fellowship Year. Several people have indicated that they have faced lengthy delays in receiving their state license; this has serious implications for both the CF (who may be waiting on a raise) and for the supervisor, who can no longer carry the CF on their license after the completion of the Clinical Fellowship.

As MSHA Past President, I have spoken with Ann Constable, who is the new Executive Director of the Board of Registration for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. She is dedicated to resolving any issues that may come up for people applying for the license to practice. She has stated emphatically that once all documentation is received in the office of the Board, it should take ONLY DAYS for the license to practice to be issued. Below are some bullet points that Director Constable provided during our conversation:

  • It is critical to remember that the Board must receive ALL documentation within 30 days of the completion of the Clinical Fellowship. You DO NOT WAIT TO RECEIVE YOUR ASHA CCC to complete your licensure paperwork!!!
  • A copy of your CF Form 1 (Plan) is due to the Board within 30 days of the start date of your Clinical Fellowship!
  • A completed Form 1 (Plan) and Form 2 (Report) is due to the Board for each and every supervisor that you have during the course of your Clinical Fellowship. No exceptions. This applies regardless of whether you changed supervisors during your Clinical Fellowship, or had multiple supervisors by design (e.g. you worked at multiple sites for your CF year.)
  • You must be using the newest versions of the applications and reports, available on-line. It is possible that the newest versions of the required documentation may have been added to the Board’s website DURING the course of your fellowship. Before completing your CF report, check to be sure that you have the latest version. Using old forms may delay the processing of your license.
  • Keep copies of everything with dates that you submit to the Board.
  • Be sure to note if your name changed during the course of the Clinical Fellowship, such as if you married.
  • Be sure that you have completed all the necessary components of the application when you submit everything.
  • If you have been waiting for your state license and are having issues getting a resolution, MSHA would like to assist you with this process. Send e-mail with your name and a brief description of your situation to SueHarrisSLP@aol.com . Be sure to include contact information and when your CF ended.
  • Pass on this information to your colleagues and friends who may be having similar issues.

MSHA Past President

Highlights from the April 2008 Student Event at Emerson College

On April 5, 2008, MSHA held our first event just for students. Students from several Massachusetts colleges and universities joined us at Emerson College for this free event. Presentations on resumes, interviews, licensure and certification, financial planning and managing stress were presented by MSHA members and other professionals. MSHA members in the fields of health care, private practice and schools were present for a question and answer panel at the end of the day, which yielded some lively discussion about the real world of clinical practice. Students also had the opportunity to meet with a recruiter on-site. The feedback received from students tells us that this was a beneficial event and provided MSHA with ways to improve and expand on our topics to better meet student needs in future years. We hope you will join us next year!

Special thanks to Cindy Bartlett and Maggie Ritter of Emerson College for donating space and helping with logistics; David Harris of Harborside Health Care for sponsorship and onsite interaction with students; Genesis Health Care for their product donation; Brookes Publishing for the items used in our raffles, and to MSHA Executive Council members who helped out during the day: Susan Jones, Julie Torrisi and Judith Bernier.
