Measure Outcomes in Aphasia

There is a well-documented research to practice gap in all fields of communication sciences and disorders (CSD), including aphasia care. One barrier to clinical practice is the variability in outcome measurement practices in aphasia, which limits our ability to make clinical decisions for care planning and identify patterns of recovery to support client outcomes. Implementation science (IS) offers methods to understand and address challenges and facilitators to practice, with a goal of promoting the systematic uptake of evidence-based research into routine clinical care. In this session, we will discuss the foundations of IS methods including frameworks, strategies, and outcomes and how IS can be applied by CSD clinicians and researchers within clinical initiatives and research to support outcome measurement. Next, we will provide examples of how IS methods were applied within our clinical research initiatives to support outcome measurement in aphasia. This session will conclude with a discussion about next steps for IS in the field of aphasia management, which can extend more broadly to CSD.

About the Presenters
Megan Schliep is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders at MGH Institute of Health Professions. She also holds a clinical appointment as a Speech-Language Pathologist at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, which is part of the Mass General Brigham Network. Her research focuses on post-stroke aphasia and explores the implementation of standardized assessment practices across the care continuum, as well as the development of clinical predictors to inform recovery patterns. She is particularly interested in identifying markers of individual ability associated with potential for improvement that can be measured in the early phases of aphasia and can be incorporated into routine practice. Additionally, she is interested in examining the interaction of communication and mobility factors on recovery trajectories and treatment responsiveness in individuals with concomitant language and motor impairment following stroke. Examining clinical factors in recovery, along with facilitators and barriers to assessment and treatment practices, has the potential to directly impact patient care and outcomes, addressing a critical gap in clinical practice in aphasia recovery.
Carla Tierney-Hendricks is a third-year doctoral student in the PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences Program at the MGH Institute of Health Professions. She has extensive clinical experience as a Speech-Language pathology in acute and rehabilitation settings, working primarily with adults with neurological conditions. She holds a clinical appointment as a Speech-Language pathologist at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. Her research focuses on improving person-centered, evidence-based care in aphasia rehabilitation using implementation science and mixed method approaches. Her work explores client engagement in the rehabilitation process with the goal of identifying and implementing practices that supports client-provider relationships and service delivery. She is also interested in developing and testing implementation strategies to support clinical decision-making in aphasia care.
